Dark Souls is a Fantasy-RPG, taking place in a time long gone. You are an undead, and so you are corralled into a prison and locked up for eternity. One day, a body comes crashing through the ceiling. Carrying the key to your cell, you catch a glimpse of a mysterious figure. Thus, your adventure begins as you escape the prison, and being the chosen undead and all, your quest to save (or destroy) mankind.
Game-play is completely seamless, with no loading screens unless you die. The game itself is quite difficult, with unforgiving bosses, strong enemies, and at times total cheapness. This game will cause fustration in the beginning as you try to hone your skills. But have patience, and we guarantee you, this game will suck you in.
Your character’s stats will dictate how you play, be it armor, weapons, or magical abilties. While most weapons have base stat requirements, they also scale depending on your stats. For example, an ultra greatsword, the strongest weapon class, can be outclassed in damage by a broadsword based on stat scaling. In addition, weapons may also have special abilities like Toxic or Bleed, which also factor into how you equip yourself. A sword that has Bleed may be more useful for a boss than a stronger sword without it.
There’s also a great multiplayer mode which can easily absorb most of your time later on. Tough boss? Summon a phantom! Want a real challenge? Be human and have someone invade you,or invade someone else! To top the sweet multiplayer icing is the Artorias of the Abyss DLC (downloadable content). It brings you back in time to the lost land of Oolacile, as it’s being corrupted by the Abyss, a pit of eternal Darkness. You must quest through the Abyss to defeat its creator and forever halt the spread of the Abyss. In the DLC, there are great new spells, new bosses to slay, and new weapons. While a bit pricey at $15, and somewhat short, it more than makes up for it in the new content it brings to the table, especially in multiplayer.
Lastly are the epic boss fights. You can slay massive dragons, gigantic mintotaurs, and deities. Defeating certain bosses awards you special souls, which can be used to craft boss weapons. Things like a spear that shoots lightning, a gigantic hammer bigger than your body, and a scimitar that is on fire, are all available from these souls. Some bosses even create multiple weapons too, with one of them crafting three separate items, and thus incentivizing at least three playthroughs to get everything. In addition, each time you successively beat the game, the next playthrough becomes overall more difficult, which greatly adds to replayability.
We would highly recommend this game for anyone with twenty bucks lying around, as it is easily one of, if not our favorite game. If you’ve got the grit, then certainly get this 10/10 game.
