Everyone knows Albany High as it is during the day, filled with classes and electives galore. What many people don’t know are the possibilities available after school, in the form of various clubs.
Joining a school club is a great way to meet classmates with similar interests, and the fact that clubs look great on college applications does not hurt either. Clubs offered at Albany High School are open to the entire student body, and they could always use more members. The clubs offered here at Albany High vary greatly, from the Drama Club to Robotics to Model United Nations, with each club having something unique to offer.
This is our third in a series of several club features we will be running over the next several weeks.
Speech and Debate – Tuesdays and Thursdays, UN room Advisor: Mr. Healy
Do you like debating? How about speaking on the fly or acting? In Debate, students learn how to build cases and argue fluently. Many of the cases are also built on current debates (such as Universal Healthcare), so through the Debate Club, a student will also gain an understanding of questions currently circulating the US. In Speech, students have the opportunity to develop their speaking skills in front of large audiences. Speech also incorporates acting skills, as in one sector of Speech, students actually pair up and act out certain scenes from books (without using any props!).
Fashion Club – Tuesday, room 104 – Advisor: Ms. Sharon Morrill
If you are interested in careers associated with fashion, then the Fashion Club is the place for you! The Fashion Club is a great way for students to work on their fashion portfolios, enter competitions, and explore careers associated with fashion design and merchandising. Members of the Fashion Club help to model the styles created by Fashion Technology. The Fashion Club also puts on two or three fashion shows a year, in which students act as designers, stylists, photographers, and models. Last year, the Fashion Club did freeze modeling in the window of the Deb Shop in Crossgates Mall during prom season.
National Honor Society – Advisor: Ms. Scialdo
Are you a senior who achieved a grade point average of 89.5 or above through your junior year? If so, then you are eligible for the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society is a prestigious organization that recognizes students for their hard work and diligence in school. The four ideals that NHS honors students for are character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Each year, the NHS is required to perform at least one service project; this year, they are running a food drive.
Chess Club – Thursday, Discovery/Leadership Cafeteria – Advisor: Ms. Gialanella
Are you interested in learning to play chess? If so, then the Chess Club is a great way to get started. The Chess Club is also open to more experienced players seeking a challenge. This club offers strategical instruction for students looking to improve their skills and has a “special forces” team for Varsity players looking to compete in local tournaments.
