This year was well known for the release of many top-selling video games. Assassin’s Creed III asserted itself as one of, if not the best, game of 2012. After receiving its first game rating of 10/10 stars and a 9.5/10 from Game Informer, one has to wonder what exactly makes Assassin’s Creed III the ruling game of 2012. Here’s a basic review of what was experienced during the campaign and multiplayer modes. No spoilers here, so enjoy!
Much like previous installments, Assassin’s Creed III mainly takes place back in time. This one in particular takes place in colonial America as Desmond, the protagonist, tries to unlock his ancestor’s past. The plot goes one step further, as the Assassins try to gain possession of the Apple of Eden, a weapon with the potential to control the entire planet. Desmond pays particular attention to an Assassin hoping to gain the information strongly needed.
After Ratohnhaké:ton’s (commonly referred to as “Connor”) mother dies in a tribal fire that was ordered by suspected Templars, he made a promise to himself that he’d seek freedom for his people and hunt down those responsible.
After years of training, Connor becomes an Assassin, assisting patriotic leaders such as George Washington and Samuel Adams. It’s this Assassin that Desmond has interest in, as he may be the solution to one of the biggest problems in eastern America.
What keeps the entire game together is the storyline, which is very well detailed, full of tension, and keeps gamers on their toes, wanting to play more and more. Regardless of whether the gamer knows much about the history of the Assassins and Templars, a basic understanding of the plot is picked up fairly quickly.
The gameplay is absolutely amazing. When it comes to graphics, it’s an instant win. Incredible scenery lies everywhere, making free roaming just as fun as running a mission. The maps (especially in Boston) can go on and on before reaching a dead end. Many gamers noted that if it wasn’t for the map itself, they would have easily been lost.
Weaponry offered and sold in the game is well designed and has effective impact on the enemy. GameStop customers are given the Sawtooth sword for extreme fighting power. Battle scenes are pretty epic, although they tend to be repetitive.
What’s also impressive is Connor’s ability to climb trees, which can play a big role when trying to assassinate British troops. Hunting is fun to do with a huge hunting area, and traveling varies either by foot, horse, or sailing your own ship. There have been bugs and glitches however, particularly regarding horse travel, as there were several instances during which their feet would float in mid-air, while at other times the horse would constantly follow Connor.
Multiplayer is exciting as well. The main goal is to assassinate other players while walking around pretending to be a normal civilian. Experienced players tend to be grouped together, and it does take a bit of practice to master.
All in all, the game is extraordinary. There is nothing better than learning American history while playing an action packed, adventurous journey during the American Revolution. Assassin’s Creed III is certainly worth the buy.
