This year, for the first time, Forensic Science classes are being held. Though the class is only an intro science, it gives real insight into one of the hottest fields of work today.
On November 15, 2012, the school found out how truly exciting the class can be. A crime scene was enacted, including a “dead student” (a skeleton), tons of evidence and leaves, and lots of bloody foot and handprints.
Here’s what the woman who made it all happen over the course of three years, Mrs. Vitas, had to say:
The Nest: Why did you decide to start the forensics class?
Vitas: I strongly feel it is important to bring Forensic Science to AHS to provide students with opportunities to engage in a problem solving, fun science. Forensic science is a biotechnology class under the disguise of the criminal element. Students appreciate running tests and labs more when analyzing crime scenes.
The Nest: Did you expect such a large, positive reaction?
Vitas: No, I was humbled with the positive response I received from both parents and students alike. I am highly committed to making Forensics a challenging and engaging class for all students here at AHS.
The Nest: At the end of this school year, what do you want your students to come away with?
Vitas: One of the biggest obstacles I face is dispelling the “CSI effect.” Many of the crime shows on TV make solving crimes appear easy and quickly achieved. This is actually not the case. At the end of this school year, I hope students gain a strong understanding of CSI and the practical use of biotechnology in analyzing and comparing evidence.
The Nest: Do you plan on doing more crimes scenes similar to the widely gossiped about “homicide of the AHS gym student”?
Vitas: Yes, throughout the year, we will create and analyze many different crime scenes. As we work each crime scene, we will learn and apply all the various ways to identify, package, process, and test evidence. Once we have mastered these skills, our year will culminate with an intense crime scene that students will take from beginning to end.
We look forward to seeing and experiencing what this class has to offer as the year goes on.
