Everyone knows Albany High as it is during the day, filled with classes and electives galore. What many people don’t know are the possibilities available after school, in the form of various clubs.
Joining a school club is a great way to meet classmates with similar interests, and the fact that clubs look great on college applications does not hurt either. Clubs offered at Albany High School are open to the entire student body, and they could always use more members. The clubs offered here at Albany High vary greatly, from the Drama Club to Robotics to Model United Nations, with each club having something unique to offer.
This is our second in a series of several club features we will be running over the next several weeks.
Book Lovers Club – Advisor: Ms. Abdul
Are you the type of person who is always looking for a good book to read? If so, then Book Lovers Club is the place for you! This year, unfortunately, there is no Book Lovers Club, as there are not enough students attending for it to be considered an official club. Instead, Book Lovers Club has become a program that is going to be run online via Goodreads, which is a place to share, catalog, and review books you have read and would like to read.
Key Club- Wednesday, room 351 – Advisor: Ms. Zebrowski
How do you feel about bettering your community? If community is important to you, then Key Club might be a good place to start! Key Club takes pride in helping people in the community through fundraising, volunteering, and charity work. So far this year, they have raised money for breast cancer and participated in the Making Strides Walk in October. The members of Key Club also collected funds on Halloween for UNICEF. In December, the members of Key Club will be donating to the Toys for Tots Program and will be making a contribution to St. Jude’s for childhood cancer research.
Robotics – Advisor: Mr. Kissane
Do you like innovation? How about building complex machines? The purpose of the Robotics Club is to introduce high school students to the world of science and technology. In the Robotics Club, students have the opportunity to work side by side with RPI School of Engineering students and professors in order to design and build a robot, which is then submitted to a competition.
Video Production/Graphic Arts Club – Advisor: Mr. Sickler
Are you interested in the Fine Arts, Communication Arts, or Multimedia Production? If so, then the Video Production/Graphic Arts Club may be the perfect fit for you! Students in the club participate in a variety of creative experiences related to video production, graphics, and television. Students have the ability to explore, experiment, and create expressive visual projects through computer graphics, animation, digital photography, and video. The club also provides students with the opportunity to create digital portfolios, which can then be used in their applications to art colleges.
Masterminds – Advisors: Mr. Deer, Mr. Bizzarro
Do you know a lot of random facts? Do you like trivia games? The Masterminds Club is made up of a JV and Varsity team that compete in various trivia games with other schools each month. The Masterminds also play a match at Proctors, which is then taped and aired on the Proctors TV channel! “What makes Masterminds so cool is getting to hang out with the kids on the team. We have so much fun in the time between matches. Last year we had a ‘banquet’ with the Varsity team at Wolf’s 1-11, where we played trivia against other people there and actually won!” -Mr. Deer, club advisor.
