The Albany Falcons 2012 baseball team expected to compete for a spot in Sectionals this season after a tough 14-2 loss to Columbia in the first round last year. Eight games into the season, however, and the Falcons are still searching for their first win.
Despite their current losing streak the inexperienced Falcons (only three returning players) continue to fight and believe they are on the cusp of victory especially as they head into a pair of games on April 23rd and the 25th against a Bishop Maginn that has also struggled thus far this season.
The two senior captains Steven Zimring and Kenan Worden lead the young Falcons squad. Steve and Kenan are the top two pitchers in the rotation and bat in the first third of the lineup as well as playing catcher and shortstop, respectively.
Much of the Falcon’s success this season will be rooted in how well the two seniors perform at the top of the rotation and the lineup. However Coach Dave Preston has stressed the need for underclassmen to pick up the slack; “Aside from Zimring and Kenan, I am really looking for someone else to step up and produce for us. We are a young and inexperienced Varsity team. We will not be able to rely on our skills to win, we will have to out work all of our opponents in order to be successful.” Preston said.
Although it is unlikely that the Falcons will make sectionals this year, they do have the opportunity to gel and grow as a team and provide a foundation for future success down the road.
