*Warning: Potential Spoilers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens Below*
With the release of the title of the next main-line Star Wars movie imminent, speculation has been rampant about what will occur in the forthcoming second installment of the trilogy. One of the main contentions about the movie has to do with something seemingly straightforward, the title. Many people may not know that the word“Jedi” can actually be singular or plural, meaning the title could refer to a single Jedi (probably Luke) or multiple (maybe Luke and Rey). However, it appears that the latter interpretation is correct as the foreign language titles of the film include the plural pronoun in the title (los Ultimos Jedi in Spanish-speaking countries, for example).
So who are these mysterious last Jedi mentioned in the title? The most logical assumption would be Luke and Rey, as at the end of The Force Awakens Rey meets Luke on his island, and, since it is confirmed that The Last Jedi will begin right where The Force Awakens left off, the movie will most likely contain scenes of Rey training with Luke. While this theory may seem a bit obvious, some see it as a bit too straightforward for the great J.J. Abrams, and believe the last Jedi may refer to someone else.
Some believe that the title is intentionally misleading and it actually does refer to one Jedi, this being Luke Skywalker. The Star Wars universe has been exploring other interpretations of the force besides the Jedi and Sith (such as The Church of the Force in Rogue One or the Bendu in Star Wars: Rebels) since it was bought by Disney, and they believe that Luke will teach Rey in a way of the force that relies on balance between the light and the dark, not only teaching one and ignoring the other (which was one of the factors that led to the downfall of the old Jedi).
Others believe that The Last Jedi refers to Luke and Finn (who they believe is secretly a force user) or Luke, Finn and Rey. Some think Supreme Leader Snoke or Kylo Ren is the titular character. Still others believe The Last Jedi doesn’t refer to Rey or Finn and actually to survivors of the Great Jedi Purge in Revenge of the Sith, such Mace Windu or Kanan Jarrus, however I find this unlikely as Disney has been steering clear of the prequels so far and such a plot development would be pretty far out there. Personally, I think The Last Jedi refers to Luke and Rey, although a storyline following training in the balance of the force would also be very interesting in my opinion.
Finally, there is one last thing to discuss about the title: the color. I believe the title is red because this movie is going to be darker than The Force Awakens just as The Empire Strikes Back was darker than A New Hope. Star Wars is at its best when it is dark (just not brooding or soul-crushingly dark), and I hope the trilogy continues in this direction for the final movie. Will you be seeing this movie? I know I certainly will be!
