The game that everyone was waiting for arrived this Halloween. The boys varsity soccer players made sure to get their rest for the semi-finals, and students skipped trick-or-treating to support their friends in order to pack the infamous nest. All in anticipation for tonight’s match up against Shenendehowa.
The rain and gloom of an October night didn’t stop the amazing energy from all team members. Senior defensive star Denis Leon stated Wednesday that “No matter what happens tomorrow there is no team I’d rather play for. I’ve never been prouder to be a part of something. I love you guys.” It’s that team brotherhood that has driven the Falcons all season long.
The entire team showed champion caliber effort tonight, including strong play from defenders Ar Nwai and Jah-heem Lawitz, as well as midfielders Ali Waleed, Erick Kwizera, and Emmanuel Ishimwe. Albany High’s goalie, Lucas Phayre-Gonzalez made several stellar saves late in the game to preserve the 2-1 Falcon win.
After Denis Leon moved the ball into Shen territory, the winning goal trickled in off a Shen defender’s knee during a scramble in front of the goal. Khalid Holtzclaw and Dan Lacetti caused the chaos that resulted in the score, bringing Albany to the championship game for the very first time in team history.
Albany presses on to play No. 3 Guilderland at Colonie High School, 5 pm Monday for the Class AA title. Make sure you’re there to support the team! The staff at The Nest congratulates the soccer team for making a history tonight!
