The name “Gangnam Style” should sound familiar to you and this is no surprise. Now reaching over one billion views, Gangnam Style is the top viewed video worldwide. Released July 15th and uploaded on YouTube in late August, the music video instantly surpassed Justin Bieber’s hit “Baby.” The Korean pop star Park Jae-sang, commonly known as Psy, performed in a variety of different events including the European Music Awards, American Music Awards, and the New Year’s party in Times Square.
Once reaching great popularity in its first month, parodies were made from a variety of YouTube channels, such as College Humor, BarelyPolitical, Whatstrending, and even Therealannoyingorange. It’s not only YouTubers, however, that are taking a shot at Gangnam Style: so is Albany High.
The concept initially sparked the interest of ninth period’s video production class. A team of four, calling themselves JAMS (an acronym representing Jabari, Ali, Muneib, and Siobhan) always joked around about the song’s composition and how silly yet catchy it was. One day, the team agreed that perhaps they should cover the song…an Albany High School version.
Of course, having only four people in an entire music video probably wouldn’t turn out so well. There needed to be a substantial amount of commitment to accumulate as many people as possible. The team posted the news on Facebook, Twitter and through the school announcements. After gathering over fifteen people in just two days, the filming commenced January 14th and is expected to be released in a week.
If you’re interested in joining, you can sign up in room 111 during 9th period between Monday-Friday. You must have a pass! If acquiring a pass isn’t possible, filming also takes place after school every Monday. Oppa Gangnam Style!
Update: As of February 2nd, Albany High’s Gangnam Style is online! The video is embedded to the right. Go ahead and give it a watch–and show your Falcon Pride by liking it on YouTube!
