Wintertime is upon us! Well, almost. Some of us may be getting all cuddled up in our footy pjs and sweatpants. But then there are those of us who are overachievers! Those dedicated girls and boys that give up their hot cocoa to play sports. They give up all their comforts to sweat (can you even sweat in pools?) and provide endless amounts of entertainment to those of us who would rather stay on the sidelines and cheer. The few, the bold, the proud. The winter sports athletes!
We all held our breath last year, when our girls basketball team faced off for the Big 10 trophy. They came away as champions thanks to the dedication of the players, coaches, and our very own Falcon Nest cheering section. This year, Decky Lawson will be the head coach of varsity with Ms. McGuire as the assistant. JV is being coached by Ms. Chapple and Freshman by Ms. Quinn. The student manager is Tierney Hornbeck. Let’s hope for a repeat of last year! GO LADY FALCONS!
Last year’s indoor track season was quite a success and we predict this year will be even better. Seniors Natasia Brown, Blessing Uzoeshi and Jalessa Montique are going to lead our ladies to great things this season. Coaching has switched up a bit with Mr. Chaney, a former AHS graduate, becoming the girls coach. Coach Star will continue to mold amazing field sports athletes and Coach Gates will continue to train our students to be stronger in the weight room. Let’s come away with the Big Ten title this year, Falcons!
Our cheer team has been leading the crowd at every football game at Bleeker Stadium as long as we can remember. Our cheerleaders are back and flying high! The coaches are Ms. Bettineschi, Ms. Brinkmoeler, and Mrs. Patterson. We wish them luck in their indoor competition season and keep that Falcon spirit up!
Not to be forgotten, our girls bowling team is starting up! Their coach is Mrs. Madson, a former gym teacher here at AHS. The sign up list was extremely long and we’re sure there will be a lot of talent this year. Keep bowling strikes, Lady Falcons!
Boys basketball is as competitive as ever. The varsity team is coached by Mr. Danzi and the JV team’s coach is Mr. Fullerd. Freshman is coached by Mr. Torison. Slam dunk that victory boys!
We hope our boys are ready to move it or lose it as indoor track starts this week. Mr. Asku is prepared to put them to work as the boys coach this year. Our track and field coach, Mr. Star, will continue to help our boys jump higher and farther this year, and Coach Gates will continue to make our boys stronger. We look forward to a great season. Bust a move, Falcons!
Our boys are ready to get down and dirty for wrestling this year. Mr. Florio is the new varsity coach this year. Hopefully JV Coach Berman can teach the guys a thing or two about winning after his extremely successful season last year.
Boys swimming has been blessed with two new coaches, Coach Branson and Coach Maldonado. They’re safely watched over by a girls swim team member, lifeguard Samantha Peltier. Let’s keep that talent overflowing!
The boys bowling team has an abundance of school spirit, even though they play at the Playdium. Mrs. Madson is also the coach for the boys team. They have done very well the last few years and we expect nothing less. Go win with some style, boys!
It looks like a promising year for all the teams. Make sure you come here for all your AHS sports news and we hope to see you in the stands cheering them on. Remember Albany High, YOU CAN’T HIDE THAT FALCON PRIDE!
