When a Harry Potter fan is asked to list their favorite things in the Harry Potter movies, Daniel Radcliffe is most likely going to be an answer. Radcliffe is well known for being in the Harry Potter series and was cast as Harry since book one. Most of his childhood involved being an actor. Viewers can see how he grew up as the movies progress and how well his acting improved over the years. The final movie (Deathly Hallows part 2) was released on July 14th, 2011 and confirmed an end of the final installment of Harry Potter.
Radcliffe’s acting interested many producers and directors including Richard Jackson and James Watkins. On February 3rd, 2012, The Woman in Black staring Radcliffe crawled its way into theaters. Could Daniel Radcliffe pull off possibly the scariest movie of 2012?
In the movie Radcliffe plays both a lawyer (Arthur Kipps) and a father. After being informed that he’s close to losing his job, Kipps is given one final chance to fix it. He is sent to an island to settle the affairs of someone by the name of Mrs. Alice Drablow. Once arriving, he realizes that the atmosphere is very dark and the settlers are dull and upset. Parents pull their children inside when they see Kipps walk by. Clearly something had happened and it didn’t seem that the people wanted to mention what it was specifically. However there was one thing for sure: Voldemort was not behind this. When Kipps enters the building to investigate paperwork, his suspicion grows and he feels that he isn’t the only one in the house. He soon realizes there’s a darkly covered woman that haunts the house. She wants something… something Kipps desperately needs to know before it’s too late.
The movie was very well done. The scenery fit the horror genre perfectly. The atmosphere and the setting are tense and suspicious. There were several good thrills including disturbing images and pop up scares. Radcliffe does a phenomenal job in regards to his reactions during frightening scenes. What’s so unique about this movie unlike many other horrors is that it’s not only the house that’s haunted; it’s the entire island.
Although Radcliffe has grown up during his years at Hogwarts, the selection for him to play the role as a father and lawyer wasn’t necessarily the best fit. Yes, it can be agreed that he did fantastic during scary scenes; however he took a huge leap from being a student in a school to being a father. His acting was very awkward towards his son in the movie and although he had a very professional look to him, his dialogue wasn’t the same.
The entire movie consisted of pop up scares which was a disappointment. Also, viewers will soon realize that Radcliffe couldn’t get hurt at all in the movie (no spoilers explaining why) and since he’s the main character, the movie didn’t have that effect where it held the audience to the tips of their seats hoping everything will be alright.
“During afternoon tea, there’s a shift in the air. A bone-trembling chill that tells you she’s there. There are those who believe the whole town is cursed… but the house in the marsh is by far the worst. What she wants is unknown but she always comes back, the specter of darkness… The Woman in Black…”
