League of Legends! It’s a game that may sound intimidating, but isn’t at all. Here’s why people should give it a gander:
League of Legends is a game published by Riot Games and was released October 27th of 2009. It is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena and has grown popular each day after its release. Many would say that in terms of popularity it was the most played PC game in 2012 and continues to have many fans today.
Now I have only played this game for a week, and in this week it has been the only thing I’ve been doing. This amusing game will quickly get you addicted.
League of Legends being a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) also carries some RPG (Role Playing Game) and RTS (Real Time Strategy) aspects included with it. The game features over 100 “champions” which are characters you take control over in this game to insure your victory.
Each champion has their own set of unique abilities which will effect how you play. There are six types of champion attributes that you are able to choose from. These attributes could determine a quick win or loss depending on who your teammates choose. they include assassin, fighter, mage, marksman or ADC (Attack Damage Carry), support and tank. Every attribute has their strengths and weaknesses and this is when the RTS aspect of the game takes place because you have to choose wisely on which champion and attribute to use.
When I first started playing the game, I noticed that most of my teammates would be telling me what type of attributes would be best to mix. Also, the champion you pick matters just as much. See, some champions are stronger than others or more difficult to use which means if you’re new to the game like me you don’t want to choose an Assassin whose difficulty level is through the roof. Players have to know their limits when playing this game. Also knowing your champions abilities helps a lot.
Let’s get to the objective: League of Legends is a Massive Online Battle Arena. The setting is in an arena, and the games feature 5v5 matches or 3v3. Players may also play against “bots” or the computer which is smart to do if you are just getting into the game. This is also promising to the growth of your personal skill in the game because each bot game features two difficulty levels: beginner and intermediate. Playing a few bot games at beginner is suggested because League of Legends is a hard game to master quickly. If you really want a challenge you can do PvP games or “Player vs. Player” but this isn’t suggested for those just getting used to the game.
There is also the option to play rank matches but this isn’t available until you reach level 30. Your primary objective in the game is for you and your team to destroy the enemy team’s turrets and move on to the opposite team’s main base to destroy their main nexus. The first team to do this wins the match. Although this sounds easy, it is just the opposite. The opposing team will attempt to possess different champions making this main task more challenging and tedious.
Each League of Legends game lasts 35-45 mins. Of course this depends on if you’re playing a 3v3 or a 5v5. 5v5’s are more competitive and take longer to end. I have not had a 5v5 game fewer than 30 mins so be ready to spend lots of free time on this game.
League of Legends has all sorts of RPG aspects. The first is the level system, each time your champion kills a “minion” or another “champion,” they gain experience points that contribute to the growth of their level. League of Legends also features an in game store that lets you buy items during the game to make your champion stronger for battle. Each champion has two bar systems, a health bar and a manna bar.
The health bar is just what it sounds like it shows how much health your champion posses at that time.
The manna bar is basically a limiter; it shows how much manna you have to use abilities. In other words “no manna” means “no ability using”.
There is also a coin system in the game that determines how much you can spend on items in the store. You must make use of your coins and spend them wisely. Like life, money is very important in League of Legends games you don’t want the other team killing more minions or champions than you. This will lead to them buying stronger items to max out their health and manna.
The most efficient way to earn quick cash is “last hitting” minions. When your attack is the last one to kill the minions you get bonus coins to use in the shop. Killing minions is the prime way to go, you will earn a lot more coins for killing enemy champions but this isn’t easy to do so again players must be smart.
League of Legends is a game that will indeed blow your mind. League of Legends must be taken seriously though in order to get as good as the pros and teamwork is the greatest aspects of the game. Play smart, play well with others and you and your champion can help lead the team to victory!
