Everyone knows Albany High as it is during the day, filled with classes and electives galore. What many people don’t know are the possibilities available after school, in the form of various clubs.
Joining a school club is a great way to meet classmates with similar interests, and the fact that clubs look great on college applications does not hurt either. Clubs offered at Albany High School are open to the entire student body, and they could always use more members. The clubs offered here at Albany High vary greatly, from the Drama Club to Robotics to Model United Nations, with each club having something unique to offer.
This is our first in a series of several club features we will be running over the next several weeks.
STEP (Science and Technology Entry Program)- Monday through Thursday, room 325 – Advisor: Ms. Mall-John
Do you need help with your studies? If so, STEP offers the opportunity for AHS students to get after school tutoring from University at Albany tutors and Ms. Mall-John. Each month, students receive a different topic to focus on. The month of October was spent on raising awareness for breast cancer. The theme for November is flu vaccines and making people aware of their importance through the distribution of flyers in different languages throughout the community.
Anime Club- Thursday, Library Computer Lab – Advisor: Ms. Abdul
The students in Anime Club do a variety of activities each week. These activities include watching anime films, putting on skits using scenes from their favorite anime, and discussing anime. Many artists also attend this club. According to Ms. Abdul, the cool thing about the club is the members’ dedication and extensive knowledge of the genre.
Model United Nations (MUN)- Mondays and Wednesdays, UN room – Advisor: Mr. Weltz
How do you feel about politics? How about coming up with solutions to major world issues? If you want to be a politician, then the Model UN club is a great place to start. At conferences, each student acts as a “delegate,” or representative, of a specific country. At these conferences, students must take the side of their country when arguing about certain topics assigned to their committees. Because many Model UN conferences occur in colleges, this club is also a great way to tour awesome college campuses.
Ski Club – Advisor: Mr. Vacanti
“Ski Club offers all students the opportunity to learn how to ski and snowboard. Living in upstate NY, the winters can be a little boring when it comes to outdoor activities. Ski Club shows students how to make the most of the cold and snow in the winter months. This is my first year being in charge of Ski Club, but as long as I am working at Albany High I intend to make sure students are always given the opportunity to ski and snowboard through AHS.” — Mr. Vacanti
Falcon Council- Wednesday, room 307 – Advisor: Mr. Goldberg
Would you like to make a difference in your school? The Falcon Council is a great way for students translate their ideas for Albany High into actions. The Falcon Council is the student government representing Albany High School. Because it is just starting up, the Falcon Council could use more members, so if you are interested, please stop by!
Check back next week for our next installment!
